Strengthened Within
Noticing Our Words

Scripture
Luke 6:45 · · ESV
When I’m tired, my words can be a bit short or even mean-spirited. Actually, that’s just an excuse. I don’t have to be tired. There are also times when I’m focused on something and my tone becomes less than friendly. I don’t mean to be that way… but the words still come out.
Luke reminds us that we speak from the abundance of our heart — good or bad. This echoes what Jesus taught about a tree being known by its fruit. The treasure we store up inside eventually spills over into our words and actions. What fills the well will rise to the surface.
When I’m calm, my words sound different. Softer. More patient. But when I feel threatened or interrupted, something sharper can surface. I know I get defensive. That reaction tells me there is something deeper stirring on the inside.
So instead of simply trying to manage my speech, I am learning to pay attention to what fills my heart. If I want different words to overflow, I must tend to the source.
Truth. Gratitude. Grace.
When I dwell on Scripture, when I give thanks, when I pause before responding, something steadier begins to take root. And slowly, the overflow changes.
Prayer
Return. Rest.
